Styling Tips for Cruise Ships

  • Decode the dress code! Each cruise line also has its own cruise ship dress code on board – ranging from sporty casual to formal elegance. You can usually find information on how to dress for the captain’s dinner, for example, on their respective websites.
  • Pack smart: For this trip, suitcase dresses and fuss-free cruise outfits are a must, especially if you’re spending several days at sea! This will make packing a lot easier and will also ensure you feel more relaxed on board. When it comes to fabrics, choose those that don’t wrinkle too much. Complicated, impractical styles are better left at home on dry land.
  • Mix & match: Assemble your looks before you travel, including jewelry and accessories. Cabin space is usually limited. Simple, long dresses are great for cruises as you can switch them up by adding different accessories. This will save an enormous amount of space, because you won’t have to plan a new gown for every evening.
  • It’s all about the basics: A high-quality modular travel wardrobe is not only practical, it’s also elegant and chic. You can use these versatile separates to create ever-changing outfits for your cruise. Take an elegant midi jumpsuit, for example. During the day you can wear it with sneakers on a shore excursion, and then change into heels later for the restaurant or the evening entertainment.

What Clothes Should I Take With Me on a Cruise?

Most cruises offer a colorful vacation program. Of course, that makes packing even more complex, because ultimately you need the right outfit for every occasion. That includes a bikini for the pool, a summer dress for the city trips, elegant short dresses for the cruise ship’s cultural program and glamorous long sleeve dresses for the gala dinner in the evening. Depending on the duration of your trip and the cruise line’s dress code, this can add up to quite a few looks. It’s best to find out about the dress code in advance. Nowadays, many operators have relaxed the dress code on board and consider a more casual maritime look to be perfectly acceptable. On the other hand, other cruise lines still require evening wear if you attend the traditional captain’s dinner. As a rule, you can find out more about this on the company’s website.
